The Martha Garden
Martha House boasts a spectacular sensory garden personally designed and built by BBC’s Charlie Dimmock and featured in her popular TV series ‘Charlie’s Garden Army’.
Along with an army of volunteer helpers from the local community and the crew of HMS Illustrious, a steep inaccessible grassy bank was transformed into the most beautiful wheelchair-friendly garden, specially designed to stimulate the senses and provide a haven of peace and tranquillity.  Ponds, fountains and waterfalls provide the soothing sound of water while the plants are specially selected for their interesting textures, fragrances and colour.  Residents are encouraged to touch plants and tactile delights can be found in soft flowers, fuzzy leaves, springy moss and rough bark.  Our summerhouse provides cover so that residents can sit out and enjoy the garden whatever the weather.

Sensory gardens are especially good for individuals with impairment of one or more of their five senses as very often they have enhanced perception in their other senses.  For instance, a resident with visual impairment may not be able to appreciate the vibrant yellow of the marigolds but will receive special enjoyment from the sound of the palm fronds rustling in the breeze or the intense smell of crushed lavender or lemongrass.

The garden is an ever-changing delight which can be enjoyed by everyone throughout the year.
