Mad for Madrid
| All the cars taking part in the 2009 Martha Trust - Mad for Madrid rally were decorated and just to ensure that the locals took notice most teams went in fancy dress. Taking part this year were Buzz Lightyear, Mr Incredible, Jurassic Park Rangers, the Dukes of Hazzard, Wally & Wenda, Thunderbirds, Peter Pan, Captain Hook and Tinkerbelle, green frogs, bees and even a working Swedish sauna! |
| The first drama occurred within half an hour of the teams arriving in France. A fan-belt snapped and quick thinking by Captain Hook (Ian the mechanic), a pair of tights and some cable-ties got the car back on the road. |
| Sponsorship money raised stands at £20,000, equalling the money raised for last years’ Rome or Bust rally. Congratulations and thanks to all the drivers, navigators, support crew, organisers. Special thanks to our sponsors Basepoint, Systems Technology, Arjo, Sandwich Rotary Club, Sandwich Toll Bridge Fund, The Art of Design Ltd. and JC Office Supplies Ltd |

| Car 1 Fiona Galbraith, Vicki Gumbrell & Danni Kennedy |
Fiona was a volunteer at Martha Trust whilst still at school and she is familiar with the great work that goes on at our homes. Fiona persuaded local spray-can artists to paint the £100 Ford Fiesta car making sure that she and friends Vicki and Danni would stand out in any crowd.

| Car 2 Judy Heath and Lesley Chiverton |
Martha managers, Judy and Gill, set out with the aim of beating the amount of money raised by Chief Executive, Graham Simmons, in 2008; however, at the last minute Gill had to drop out. Lesley stepped in at short notice to share the drive and Judy, Gill and Lesley would like to thank their sponsors, Systems Technology, Basepoint and Arjo - watch out for their logos decorating the car on the DVD!

| Car 3 James Tysoe & John O’Grady |
James and John both work for Pfizer - one as a Project manager and the other as a Workplace Strategist. James and John both live in Kingsdown and have taken part in Martha events in Sandwich in the past. Interesting fact…John is also Chairman of the British snowboarding team…! The lads were very keen to get their hands on a Robin Reliant, but these ‘classic cars’ were out of their price bracket, instead they drove to Madrid in a 1994 Volvo 850 estate donated by a friend with ‘too many cars and not enough sense!’.

Car 5 Charlie Ball & Barry Coleman
| Charlie and Barry (or Team Cakey & Ball) have been friends for over twenty years. They enjoy plenty of boyish activities such as fishing, sailing, playing on jet skis/quad bikes and silly drinking games even holidaying together on occasions. They try to cram as much fun into everything they do and are always up for a laugh which probably explains why drove to Madrid in a pink Hyundai Accent. Although slightly embarrassed about the colour they were pleased to stand out from the crowd and they would like to thank all of their sponsors for helping to disguise the colour with stickers and logos. |

Car 6 Ken & Wendy Hatch

Ken, the MD of storage technology supplier UK CA Ltd made the trip with his able navigator and wife, Wendy. The pair found a 12 year-old Fiat looking cold and lonely in a mid-Kent scrap yard and decided to rescue her. The car had already done the equivalent of over 130 trips to Madrid so they reckoned (correctly) that she should be able to make just one more!

Breakdown Car Ian, Julie & Lillie Brett
Ian (the mechanic for the trip) and wife Julie (the event organiser) were accompanied by their ten year-old daughter Lillie. All three successfully completed the trip down to Rome last year and were looking forward to trying out the Pyrenees instead of the Alps. As several of the teams decided to go in fancy dress the Brett family dressed up as Peter Pan, Captain Hook and Tinkerbell no prizes for guessing who is who!
