What our staff say

JOAN HAY, Support Worker

I started work at Martha House at Deal in 1989, only a few years after it opened when there were only eight residents. Many things have changed since then but one thing that hasn’t changed is the warm, caring atmosphere at Martha Trust - everyone comments on it!
I feel privileged to have experienced the way in which a client’s smile or laughter can light up a room; their progress and achievements, no matter how small, can lift our spirits and make us feel on top of the world.

NORMA JARVIS, Support Worker

I joined Martha Trust in 1994, working with respite clients, I now work in our Day-care centre as a support worker and I am also Health & Safety Officer.
When I think back over the years I always remember the clients with great fondness.  Sadly, not all of them are still with us but I have some very special memories that will stay with me forever.  I get a great deal of satisfaction from working with the parents and families of our clients. They trust us to care for their sons and daughters and we always try to exceed their expectations.  A smile from a client or a ‘thank-you’ from a parent makes the job worth doing.

GILL BURNHAM, Director of Nursing

I had a friend who worked in Martha House and she was always telling me what a great place it was. At the time I was working as a nurse in the NHS so when a vacancy arose I decided to apply. I started in Frances House when it was a home for children, and I loved working with them, but when an opportunity came up to become the Home Manager in Martha House I jumped at the chance.
Studying for my NVQ 4, Registered Manager’s Award gave me the confidence to try new ideas and initiatives.  In 2005 Martha Trust opened Mary House in Hastings and I was promoted to Nursing & Quality Assurance Manager with responsibility for all our homes.  Setting-up Mary House was hard work but satisfying, and inevitably – as with all projects - there were setbacks and problems, but it was all made worthwhile on the day the first residents moved in.

JUDY HEATH, Director of Resources

I started work for Martha Trust in 1998 as a general administrator in the Trust Office.  As the charity grew and developed I was given greater responsibilities and realised I had a real interest and flair for financial matters.

I was encouraged by Martha Trust to attend college and after 3 years of studying part-time I received my Accounting Technician Certificate from the AAT.  This enabled me to concentrate more on such things as budgets and financial forecasting which I really enjoy!  As we have taken on more employees, I have helped to train the admin staff and was delighted to be promoted to Financial and Administration Manager in 2005.

I love my job and get real satisfaction knowing that, through my work, I am helping to make a difference to the lives of our residents.

Martha Trust is a great employer.  I feel that the company really cares about me, not just as an employee but as a person too.  This makes me want to do the very best I can, every day.
