Rome or Bust a Great Success
In May we held our first banger rally and all 11 cars and 23 passengers who left Paddock Wood on May 3rd, arrived safely in Rome just three days later. The event raised nearly £20,000 to help fund therapies and activities for residents at Martha Trust homes.

Participants purchased cars worth less than £100 and many decorated the vehicles with themes including the Blues Brothers and the Flintstones. Travelling in convoy, the cars journeyed through France and over the Alps into Italy with two hotel stops en-route. The event culminated at the Colloseum in Rome. Many drivers spent a few extra days in Rome enjoying the Italian hospitality before flying home.
Martha Trust Fundraiser, Julie Brett, commented "Rome or Bust was an incredible event; it was challenging but everyone has great memories from the event. Raising nearly £20,000 is the icing on the cake as the event will make a big difference to the number of therapies and activities we can offer our residents". Julie went on to say: "We have had so much interest in the event that we are planning a banger rally for Martha Trust next year - probably ending in one of Spain's great cities".

Work on hydrotherapy pool at Mary House begins

We are one step closer to offering hydrotherapy for disabled people in Hastings. Builders have started work on our wonderful new hydrotherapy pool at Mary House in Hastings. Once completed next year, the state-of-the-art hydrotherapy pool will allow Mary House residents to have regular sessions, and will open to local people with disabilities two days a week.
As well as the hydrotherapy pool, the new annexe will include four additional bedrooms to provide much needed residential and respite care for people with profound and multiple disabilities and complex health needs in the region.
Mary House Home Manager, Paul Simmons said "Residents and staff are all really excited that works have begun and we look forward to welcoming new residents and offering hydrotherapy to local people next year."

Futurebuilders announce investment in Mary House
Extension and hydrotherapy pool build to go ahead Summer 2008.
Futurebuilders, the Government-funded investment agency charged with revitalising the voluntary and community sector has selected Martha Trust in Hastings as an exemplar of service delivery in Sussex.
After a rigorous 6 month vetting process in which Martha Trust's finances, admin and future plans were scrutinised, Futurebuilders decided to back Martha Trust's project to extend Marty House and to increase services for young people with profound physical and multiple disabilities in the region.
The new extension will provide a new 'home within a home' with four new en-suite bedrooms and large living areas and a new kitchen. There will also be a large, high specification hydrotherapy pool which will save the residents at Mary House making a 120-mile round trip to our Deal homes each week for hydrotherapy. The new pool will also be available for use by members of the public who are disabled, elderly, have special needs or who have long-term health conditions.

Graham Simmons, Chief Executive of Martha Trust, said "We are thrilled to win the endorsement of a major investor such as Futurebuilders, and the Tonbridge-based Charity Bank are also investing in Martha Trust in Hastings; all of which is good news for disabled people of East Sussex"

KHoCA make presentation
to Martha Trust

Martha Trust were presented with a cheque for £7,500 and a plaque by KHoCA. (Kent Handicapped Caring Association). The money will fund the final stage of the Frances House sensory garden make-over.

The cheque was donated by the Kent grant maker KHoCA after one of their committee members, Mimi Anderson, donated her prize money following her win at the '6633 Ultra' last year. Crossing the Arctic circle and continuing along the  banks of the Arctic Ocean, Ms Anderson ran over 350 miles in an astonishing 143.25 hours to secure the title.
The Chairman of KHoCA, Judy Charlton, Vice Chair, Claire Cannon and KHoCA supporter Ann Kemp, attended the presentation at Martha Trust along with Mimi Anderson and Martha Trust Trustee, Rodney Stone.

The funds will be used to complete the final stages of the sensory garden make-over for Frances House, home to five young people with profound and multiple disabilities.

Maureen Hutchinson, Frances House Home Manager, commented: "We are thrilled to receive this cheque as the funds will enable us to replace the weathered, hazardous paving around Frances House, allowing our young people to safely access all areas of the sensory garden in their wheelchairs". Mrs Hutchinson continued: "KHoCA have been long term supporters of Martha Trust and in the past have helped fund specialist sensory equipment for our hydrotherapy pool. It was particularly good to meet Mimi and congratulate her on this most remarkable challenge". Mimi Anderson responded: "KHoCA are delighted to make this donation to Martha Trust, as the charity provide wonderful care for people with profound disabilities. I am personally pleased that my ultra-marathon success will help improve the lives of the special young people who live at Frances House. Visiting Frances House has made all the hard work that went into my race, worthwhile".
