Breaking Ground for New Home in Hastings

7th April 2005

Building work will begin on the second phase of Mary House, on Thursday, 7th April.  Mary House is owned by Martha Trust and, on completion, will be home to 8 young adults with profound disabilities.  Martha Trust runs two similar homes in Kent and is delighted to be able to expand these services to East Sussex where there is a serious shortage of similar facilities.

Martha Trust is a Christian charity which relies heavily on charitable contributions to fund the cost of this project.  So far, more than £500,000 has been collected by our fundraising team with another £225,000 still to be raised.

Diggers will move on to the site on Thursday morning watched by the architects and Chief Executive of Martha Trust, Graham Simmons.  He said, “This second phase will create four more bedrooms for Mary House, bringing the total to eight and we hope to have the work finished and the home up and running by the end of October.  We’re delighted that local contractors Quadric, who built phase one of the home, will be returning to carry out this project and will be working with architect Paul Dowinton.  The project will benefit greatly from their joint expertise”.  Meanwhile, little time is being lost at looking ahead to phase three.  Although some way off yet, it’s hoped these plans will include additional facilities such as respite, daycare and therapies.  Graham added, “The name Mary comes from the ancient Greek and means to love and care without expecting anything in return.  That name is entirely appropriate for our new home, which we know is badly needed in East Sussex”.
