The pool was originally built in 1996 and has been used daily for therapeutic benefit by the
residents with profound disabilities who live at the Martha Trust residential homes. After 10 years continued use, it desperately needed upgrading and improving.
After hearing the plea for improved equipment by care staff at the charity, a group of 25 friends from Paddock Wood Baptist Church organized a 60 mile fundraising sponsored walk. The group which included Martha Trust’s Chief
Executive, Graham Simmons, walked from Paddock Wood to Deal in 3 days, and raised a staggering £16,000.
The new specialist sensory equipment has now been installed and provides lights, mist and sounds which combine to produce different experiences. The hi-tech IT system allows care staff to work with each resident to personalise a sensory programme for their needs, making the experience truly unique. The equipment is designed to be used by people with profound disabilities, and can be operated in the water, using floating units with pads sensitive to slight movements.
Lesley Critcher, Martha Trust’s hydrotherapy support worker commented about the effect the new system has had on the residents: “ There is now a full sensory experience inside and outside the pool. It has been amazing to see the reactions from our residents, all of whom have enjoyed the experience immensely.” Mrs Critcher continued: “I would like to thank everyone who took part or supported the walk - their fundraising efforts have made a big difference to the lives of our residents at Martha.”
The Martha Trust runs two homes in Deal and one home in Hastings for adults with profound physical and learning disabilities. They also run a respite care and day-care service in Deal, helping many more local families.
