Mary House celebrates first birthday
December 2006

The High Sheriff of East Sussex, Amanda Hamblin, recently hosted a party at Mary House, Hastings to celebrate the first birthday of the residential home for young people with profound disabilities. During the celebrations, a campaign was launched by Martha Trust  to build a hydrotherapy pool on The Ridge.

Representatives from a number of local businesses and groups attended the party, including the Maureen Charlesworth, Mayor of Hastings and Peter Linsey, Editor of the Hastings Observer. Guests shared a festive breakfast with the residents and staff from the home and enjoyed a tour of the facilities.

During the reception, Graham Simmons, Chief Executive of Martha Trust launched the new appeal to build a hydrotherapy pool at Mary House. He said: “Hydrotherapy is hugely beneficial for people with a whole range of disabilities. As a form of physiotherapy it helps strengthen muscles, improve circulation, build strength and relieve pain. Hydrotherapy also allows users with physical disabilities to feel weightless, and free from the disabilities.”

Mr Simmons continued: “To celebrate Mary House’s first birthday we are launching our campaign to build a hydrotherapy pool on The Ridge for use by local people and our young residents.” He finished: “We hope that local businesses and groups will support our fundraising activities which will enable many people to benefit from this project.”

The pool will be fitted with the very latest equipment including an impressive IT system, operated by users in the water, which co-ordinates music, aromatherapy, sounds and special effects for a truly sensory experience. Martha Trust plan to open the state-of-the-art pool several sessions a week to people in the area with disabilities. The young residents at Mary House will also use the service on a regular basis.

The new building project at Mary House will also include further accommodation, including two respite care places for use by people with profound disabilities in the surrounding area.

Amanda Hamblin, High Sheriff of East Sussex leant her support to the project saying: “The care and opportunities provided for the young residents at Mary House is superb. I am delighted that Martha Trust plan to extend their service on The Ridge, particularly the hydrotherapy and respite services which will help many local people.”
