Fundraising FAQs
The following may answer your question about fundraising.
1. Can I organise my own raffle?
  • If you're planning on organising your own raffle, check the rules with the local authority or www.gamblingcommission.gov.uk( Martha Trust is not responsible for the content of external websites). And if you’re arranging the event on private property, always ask permission from the owner.
  • Small raffles are fine so long as they don’t contain cash prizes and are part of a larger event i.e. the tickets for the raffle are sold at the event itself. If you would like to sell raffle tickets to a wider audience over a longer period of time you will need to adhere to a number of rules, otherwise your activity may be in danger of being unlawful.
2. Can Martha Trust donate some prizes for a raffle I’m organising?
Every penny donated to Martha Trust goes straight to the charity, which means we don’t have funds to supply raffle prizes.
3. My company would like to get involved in fundraising. What do I need to do?
If your company is interested in becoming a corporate supporter please email us at: contact@marthatrust.org.uk . Alternatively there are lots of fundraising ideas in our own Fundraising Events Ideas pack, which can be found on our website.
4. Can I collect money for Martha Trust in public places?
We don’t encourage fundraisers to collect money in the street as many people find this intrusive. You will need a licence from your local authority or the police but we regret we’re unable to provide a letter of authority for a licence application and would recommend that you arrange your own fundraising event rather than a collection.
5. Can I collect money door to door?
We don’t encourage fundraisers to collect money in the street as many people find this intrusive. You will need a licence from your local authority or the police but we regret we’re unable to provide a letter of authority for a licence application and would recommend that you arrange your own fundraising event rather than a collection.
6. Can I send you my unwanted clothes/furniture?
Unfortunately we don’t have the facilities to deal with unwanted clothing or furniture.
7. How do I volunteer to help at Martha Trust?
Volunteering opportunities are available in many areas of Martha’s work and are vital to our success. We need help with the following:
  • Help with fundraising activities
  • Help in our well established garden
  • Help with art and craft activities
  • Befriending
  • Help during outings
  • Help with musical activities

Please call 01304 615223 for more information or email: mickelecordes@marthatrust.org.uk

8. Can I have a copy of Martha Trust logo to use in my fundraising events?
Please contact us at 01304 615223
9. Can I get collection boxes for my fundraising event?
Please contact us with details of your fundraising event as unfortunately, we don’t have the funds to supply many collection boxes. If you’re thinking of organising a collection please bear in mind the following details.
  • house-to-house collections without a proper license are illegal and many people find them intrusive
  • you can't collect money in the street or any other public place without a license from your local authority or the police

We recommend you arrange a fundraising event rather than a collection.

10. How can I get media coverage of my event?
Local newspapers like to feature colourful stories, so ensure you let them know about your event. If you need help producing a press-release please call us on: 01304 615223. Alternatively send us some photos and notes about your event, and we will do the rest.
11. What is Gift Aid and how does it mean more money for Martha Trust?
If you’re making a donation and you pay tax, or you’re being sponsored and your sponsors pay tax, then it’s possible the Inland Revenue will give the charity an extra 28p for every pound raised. All you or your sponsors have to do is tell us if you’ll have paid any tax this year that adds up to more than the extra money being claimed.

So doing a bit of maths, if £10 is given this means an extra £2.80 can be claimed if the person giving the money has paid tax of £2.80 or more. If £100 is given this means an extra £28 can be claimed if the tax paid is £28 or more. This is an easy way to get more money! But your sponsors need to tick the box on your sponsorship form. Use our Gift Aid Form if your are making a donation.

12. How can I get a certificate for the money I’ve raised?
To receive a Thank You Certificate, send a note requesting a certificate with your cheque or original paying-in counterfoil or receipt (keep a copy) to Martha Trust, Fundraising Office, Homemead Lane, Hacklinge, Deal, Kent CT14 0PG
13. I would like to include Martha Trust in my will. What do I need to do?
Throughout the year we receive donations in the form of legacies and we’re incredibly grateful for donations of this sort. If you’d like to consider Martha Trust as a beneficiary in your will, you should contact your solicitor. He or she will require the following details:

14. Do I need insurance for my event?
Martha Trust cannot accept liability for events, and if relevant, you should arrange your own insurance.

Pay particular attention to the following:

  • Be aware of uneven surfaces and in particular slippery steps or staircases. Make sure cables don’t cause a trip hazard
  • Don’t touch exposed electrical parts. Ensure tables are erected correctly and supported well.
  • Identify an open area to use for an emergency evacuation. Consider the safety needs of those with special needs or disabilities.

If you are unsure about any aspect of health and safety, please contact the agencies below.

Event Safety Guide HSG 195 from TSO books, your local fire safety officer or your local environmental health officer.

15. We are thinking of arranging a play or musical event. Will we need a Public Entertainer’s Licence?
You may need a public entertainers licence if you are planning to sell tickets to an event involving dancing, singing etc.,. Most venues for hire will already have one of these and you will simply need to adhere to their guidelines.
